THE TRAINING PROGRAMME SCENE insiders Gothenburg 2004 3 day event The programme consists of 5 x 1.5 hour modules taught by The Script Factory’s training team. The Script Factory has established a reputation for designing comprehensive training courses, which provide an intelligent forum for producers, readers, developers and story editors to explore and refine the way they work with screenwriters. The Script Factory has worked with the UK Film Council, the Regional and National Screen Agencies in the UK, commercial production and distribution companies and many partners overseas. Our guiding principle is that the developer’s task is to help writers tell their stories as well as they possibly can. The purpose of SCENE insiders is to create a pool of skilled, trained and confident script and story editors who can effectively assist writers of feature film and television throughout Europe in improving the quality of their scripts. Better scripts make better products, which stand the best chance of reaching audiences around the world. The course takes participants through a structured process, which begins with storytelling theory, and progresses through working with writers, to refining scripts and then exploring effective ways of approaching the industry. Genre – Lucy Scher This first session introduces the concept of Genre Theory, a tool to help you decide with confidence whether or not a screen-story is working. It is not about being ‘commercial’ or asking your writers to compromise their voice and integrity - rather it is about understanding how audiences emotionally engage with stories in order to develop screenplays which are satisfying and meaningful. Whose Story is it Anyway? – Marilyn Milgrom In the collaborative process of filmmaking the delineation of roles can easily become blurred, but at script stage its imperative to let the writer write. This session considers how to negotiate development meetings to make them most productive for the developer, the producer, the writer and the script. This session will tackle some of the key questions that confront anyone working in this sensitive area: how do I know what the writer should re-write? How do I access the ‘next draft’ fresh when I already know the first one so well? And, what do I do when the next draft gets worse? Screenplay Analysis –Ludo Smolski By examining the ideas that inform dramatic and narrative structure, this session will explore ways of thinking about how stories should work in order to determine whether or not a script is working. The focus of this module is to provide a methodical process through which to analyse scripts and to turn your instinctive response to material into constructive feedback that will form the foundation of script development work. The Controlling Idea – Marilyn Milgrom Films are stories told in a visual medium and, like all stories, they have a function (apart from making money): to communicate something to an audience that helps them understand themselves better, or to help them deal with life by reaffirming the possibility of making order out of chaos, or that good can conquer evil, or that love can triumph over hate. The meaning we take away from the experience of watching the film is called the Controlling Idea. This session explores how to identify or determine the controlling idea of a story and subsequently how to use this as a tool when working with the writer to refine the screenplay. Treatments and Pitching – Lucy Scher Treatments are a written sales document and pitching is a verbal version, yet there is an overwhelming lack of clarity within the industry about these terms. This session offers a practical guide to understanding the treatment form, both assessing a treatment that a writer may submit to you and working with a writer to create a document that effectively sells your film project. We will also consider how to prepare for a pitch situation: when is the project ready to sell and who should I be selling it to? It is Sweden’s most important seaport and its second largest city; it is also a major commercial and industrial center and a rail junction. It is serviced by the Torslanda Airport, which has international flights. Manufactures include cameras, paper products, fabricated metal products, motor vehicles, processed food, mineral oils, and refined petroleum. There are large shipyards and fisheries in the city. Göteborg has two universities; several academies, museums, and parks; an opera house; and one of the country’s largest sports stadiums. 1 Göteborg was founded in 1604 by Charles IX, but was soon after destroyed by the Danes in the Kalmar War. It was rebuilt by Gustavus II in 1619 and quickly became a major commercial center with large colonies of Dutch and English merchants. The Swedish East India Company was founded at Göteborg in 1731. The city’s port was expanded in the mid-18th cent.; in the early 20th cent. it became the terminus of an important transatlantic shipping service. In 1865 the Göteborg licensing system for the control of liquor sales (see liquor laws) was originated there.
