Even if you’re lucky enough to be able to set aside time to work out, things like school holidays, childhood illnesses, and teacher conferences have a way of eating up these extra hours along with our best intentions.
You may not have time to go to the gym, but you can still be physically active and boost your metabolism by using a bit of creativity in planning your day. During a recent week when my kids were sidelined by a nasty cold, I started thinking about ways to be physically active when going to the gym was out of the question. I also asked some trainers for their advice. We came up with the following ways to fit exercise into a packed-full day:
1. If you’ve got a young sports enthusiast in the family, play along. Shooting baskets and kicking a soccer ball around the yard are great ways to get your heart pumping. Thirty minutes of cardio training are recommended, but even five to ten minutes will elevate your energy and speed your metabolism.
2. Take the kids for a walk. If their pace is too slow, add some lunges, jumping jacks, or running in place every few minutes to make yourself work harder.
3. Pull young children in a wagon through the neighborhood. Or give them a ride in a jogging stroller.
4. Let little children ride bicycles or tricycles while you jog behind.
5. Get into some vigorous sweeping, mopping, or vacuuming. These types of housekeeping chores can burn a significant number of calories.
6. We’ve all heard the benefits of taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Everything you’ve heard is true.
7. Likewise, getting off the bus or subway a stop or two before your destination on a regular basis adds up to a lot of heart-healthy walking.
8. Do yoga or Pilates while you, or the kids, unwind in front of a movie. While watching TV, do push-ups or sit-ups during commercials. Even one per commercial during a two-hour movie can give you some good exercise.
9. In a sedentary job, take your breaks outdoors and have a brisk, short walk. You’ll also improve your concentration and mood.
10. Dance or do aerobics at home. No one’s watching, anyway. If you like, include the little ones and turn it into a game.
11. Practice stretching or light yoga moves while talking on the phone, listening to the news, or while dinner is cooking. .
12. Find the high-energy items on your to-do list and tackle these when you need physical activity. Think about washing the car, digging the garden, mowing the lawn, or reorganizing a closet.
13. Get up 15 to 30 minutes earlier than the rest of the family and use this time for a run, a walk, or some stretching and yoga.
As the Head of Public Services in the McMaster University Health Sciences Library in Hamilton, Ontario, I have a professional interest in making health care information resources on the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) accessible. You can access information about the Internet or the WWW by clicking on either of the highlighted links in the previous sentence. Since the Health Sciences Library serves schools of medicine, nursing and rehabilitation sciences (in the Faculty of Health Sciences ), and since we are located in a major teaching hospital -- the McMaster University Medical Centre Campus of the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation -- I am often able to make the resources I use for my clients available to a broader audience of non-professionals (patients, sometimes, and their families and friends) interested in health and health care, through the creation of this web page: Health Care Information Resources.
If you are between 8 and 14 years of age and want to learn about the WWW, click here: *The Web Guide for Kids: Yahooligans to access a special guide to the web created for kids by YAHOO.
I have been developing this page since Canada Day (1 July) 1995 as a collection of links to sources of health care information of interest to a broad spectrum of potential users, both in Canada and beyond. Among the users I have in mind in the development of this resource are: patients, their families and friends, and their health care workers. The resources presented here are not intended exclusively for those who are ill. Anyone with an interest in health (maintaining it, protecting it and improving it, especially), and everyone interested in the quality of health care available to us (consumers and health care practitioners, too) will find electronic information sites of interest in the various sections of this "page".
The "page" has many parts, represented in the Contents lists as: Health Information Sites, Illness and Wellness, among others. These titles are only rough guides to the resources grouped together in each section. Explore them at your leisure! You can move around easily by "clicking on" the name of the section you want to access, because the summary of section titles appears at the foot of every section in this resource. You are sure to find something here you can use, something that you didn't know, or something that will interest a friend whose health concerns you. I invite you to visit this page from time to time and watch the resources available here grow.
This document is now mounted on the McMaster University Health Sciences Library WWW server: Tiohnhe (a Mohawk name meaning: that which gives life; it is pronounced: "JUNE-hay"). Originally mounted on the Hamilton-Wentworth FreeNet (now called the Hamilton CommunityNet), it was moved to Tiohnhe when the document became cumbersome to load from the HWFN server because of its size. This version of the document will be easier to load because it has been broken up into smaller parts which load more quickly.
You can send me e-mail using the links below and at the end of the document if there is some particular health care information you can't find or would like to see here.

Health Care Information Resources makes information about health and disease accessible in the belief that the informed consumer is a more satisfied consumer of healthcare. This service does not offer advice about health or healthcare and cannot substitute for a healthcare practitioner. Only personal contact with the qualified healthcare practitioner of your choice -- who knows your health history, who can examine you, and who can bring expertise and experience to bear on your situation -- can yield advice about how you ought to handle any of the information you obtain from sources accessed through this service.
Decisions regarding your healthcare should always involve the assistance of a trusted healthcare practitioner.
For starters, try following this link to the *Health Canada/Sante Canada home page and explore the links to health care topics and organizations offered on the home page of the Canadian federal government department responsible for health care. Aussi disponible en francais a la meme addresse.
Health is a provincial responsibility in Canada, and thus, provincial governments play an extremely large role in healthcare in this country, on both the large and the very personal scales. The *Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care web site offers access to information spanning the full range of its involvement with the health of the people of Ontario. There is a guide to health services in the province, lists of contacts in the ministry, health units and OHIP offices, of publications available in print and on the web, and much more. The site offers a valuable introduction to health care in Ontario. Access it by clicking on the name underlined above.
The Ontario Ministry of Health maintains a page of links to the web sites of health departments of other provincial governments in Canada. If you want to access the health department web page of Nova Scotia, or Manitoba, or any other province (other than Ontario), click here: HealthLinks: Provincial / Territorial Health
The affiliated telephone companies across Canada bring you access to health care information on the web via Sympatico in a: *Health directory . In addition to lots of links, the service offers reviews of many of the sites to which it links you, and easy access to a large collection of health care information. Si vous desirez a lire des ressources sur la sante en francais, le choix est a vous. Cliquez ici: *Sante pour que Sympatico puisse rendre vos recherches rapides et faciles. Sympatico is also the name of the telephone companies' dial-up Internet service and the website used in that service; don't worry, though, you won't be charged for accessing their web site!
An extremely large, well-organized provider of information about health sites on the WWW is YAHOO; click here: *YAHOO: Health to access a large, categorized list of pointers to health care sites on the World Wide Web. This is one of the most frequently and regularly updated lists on the 'net. Et maintenant, il y a le site web (et la liste): *YAHOO: France ou on trouve la section de: *YAHOO: France: Sante. Malgre le nom, cette section de Sante est plein des sites Quebecois. Visitez-le en pesant sur les noms soulignes!
The *HealthWorld Online Village is an interesting site organized around the concept of a community. Collections of various health care resources are represented by community institutions; so, for example, in the "Marketplace", one finds various products for sale such as books, health food, healthy travel, and health insurance; and in the "Health University", a collection of continuing education courses and resources for health care consumers and professionals. There is also a "Press Center", a "Clinic", a "Public Health Center", and so on; one can imagine the wealth of information collected and organized in this fashion. A particularly noteworthy aspect of this collection is that it is amazingly strong in resources for "Alternative and Complementary" medicine; many of the "centers" present this sort of information along with the usual drug and surgery based treatments of allopathic medicine. Click on the name above for access to this site.
A computer at Harvard University offers access to a collection of home pages from many hospitals; follow this link *HospitalWeb for documents on a variety of clinical and patient education concerns mounted by hospitals.
The World Health Organization (WHO) maintains an extensive list of access points to health and health care information on its server in Switzerland; explore the *World Health Organization resources by clicking here.
The World Health Organization's *World Health Report web site contains links to its annual reports on health around the world from 1995 to the present. The current (2004) report: *Changing history shows how treatment of AIDS around the world can make life better for many and why expanding the scale of that treatment is so important. Click on the title above to access the English report; click here to read the French reports *Rapport sur la Sante dans le Monde.
The *Pan American Health Organization is an international public health agency working to improve health and living standards in all of the countries of the Americas; it also serves as the regional office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO). It has an extensive and useful web site with "country profiles" that describe health and government in each of its member states. Click on the underlined name to access this information.
A very large and interesting collection of U.S. government policy and regulatory materials related to health care, with many peripherally useful documents, has recently appeared as Health Hippo. No matter how strange you may think the name, you owe it to yourself to check this site out! There is something here for everyone; click here: *Health Hippo to explore the wackiest approach to useful health care information I have ever seen.
Another interesting site, full of multimedia resources for both patients and health care providers, is the Virtual Hospital at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Click here to access the *Virtual Hospital at the University of Iowa.
Health sciences libraries create and maintain collections of published information about health care and offer services which enhance the value of that information. Access to information about the services and collections of many health sciences libraries at institutions throughout the world is provided through a list maintained by Eric Rumsey at the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences at the University of Iowa. Click here to access this list of *Medical/Health Sciences Libraries on the Web. Some of these libraries offer access over the WWW to their catalogues of holdings; others do not.
The Hardin Library has also created a meta-directory of Internet resources on the medical specialties. If you are looking for lists of lists on specific topics -- allergy, family medicine, gastroenterology, pathology, and many others are included -- then, perhaps, this is the site for you! Click here to access the: *Hardin Meta-Directory of Internet Health Sources at the University of Iowa.
The *Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is a federally chartered but independent, not-for-profit organization. It brings programs, functions and activities from the Hospital Medical Records Institute (HMRI), The MIS Group, Health Canada (Health Information Division) and Statistics Canada (Health Statistics Division) together under one roof. Its primary functions are: collecting, processing and maintaining a comprehensive and growing number of health databases and registries covering health human resources, health services and health expenditures; setting national standards for financial, statistical and clinical data as well as standards for health informatics technology and producing value-added analysis from its information holdings. Stakeholders include ministries of health, health care facilities, health-related organizations and associations, the research community, private sector and the general public. Some statistical tables are beginning to be available at this new site. Click on the underlined name above for access. Among the health problems with major impact on our community are AIDS, Alzheimer's Disease, cancer, and many kinds of substance abuse. Illness is a broad concept; it encompasses, in addition to the specific pathologies already mentioned, other problems and challenges to the health of individuals and communities. Communicable diseases and women's health are issues of major concern, as are disabilities of many sorts. Information resources for those afflicted or affected -- patients and their families and friends -- can be accessed here.
Please use the Introduction or the Got Any Comments? pages (accessible through the icons at the bottom of this page) if you want to send me e-mail about these resources.

This curious surface is called a Möbius Strip or Möbius Band, named after August Ferdinand Möbius, a nineteenth century German mathematician and astronomer, who was a pioneer in the field of topology. Möbius, along with his better known contemporaries, Riemann, Lobachevsky and Bolyai, created a non-Euclidean revolution in geometry.
Möbius strips have found a number of surprising applications that exploit a remarkable property they possess: one-sidedness. Joining A to C and B to D (no half twist) would produce a simple belt-shaped loop with two sides and two edges -- impossible to travel from one side to the other without crossing an edge. But, as a result of the half twist, the Möbius Strip has only one side and one edge!
To demonstrate this, (1) start midway between the "edges" of a Möbius Strip and draw a line down its center; continue the line until you return to your starting point. Did you ever cross an edge? (2) Next, hold the edge of a Möbius Strip against the tip of a felt-tipped highlighter pen. Color the edge of the Möbius Strip by holding the highlighter still and just rotating the Mobius Strip around. Were you able to color the entire edge? (3) Now, with scissors cut the Mobius Strip along the center line that you drew. Then draw a center line around the resulting band, and cut along it. Did you predict what would happen?
Giant Möbius Strips have been used as conveyor belts (to make them last longer, since "each side" gets the same amount of wear) and as continuous-loop recording tapes (to double the playing time). In the 1960's Sandia Laboratories used Möbius Strips in the design of versatile electronic resistors. Free-style skiers have christened one of their acrobatic stunts the Möbius Flip.
The famous artist, M.C. Escher, used mathematical themes in some of his work, including a Möbius parade of ants. His flight of swans looks like it might be a Möbius Strip, but it's not. Can you see why not? Organ transplantation - See: Transplantation, below.
